Prana is the Sanskrit term for the fundamental life force or vital energy that animates all living things. The breath is considered its most direct and accessible expression in the body.
In the yogic tradition the breath is understood as the physical carrier of prana. When you inhale, you're not just taking in air — you're drawing in vital energy that nourishes the subtle body.
The state of the breath and the state of prana are intimately linked. Shallow, erratic breathing corresponds to scattered or depleted prana. Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing cultivates and moves prana with intention. This is why breath awareness is the central tool of yogic practice — you you can shape it through the breath. By focusing on your breath you directly influence your energy, emotional state, and even your mental clarity — because you are shaping the very force that yoga says underlies all of it.
Additionally, the breath is a direct means of living in the present moment. When we focus on the breath we are able to let go of our fixation on thought. This is where peace lives: not in the absence of difficulty, but in the steadiness beneath it. The breath has always been there, patient and faithful, waiting to bring us home. We only need to remember to listen and feel it.
